The Aluminium - Dialysis Fluid test measures the concentration of aluminium in dialysis fluid or another approved sample from a haemodialysis system. Dialysis fluid comes into close contact with a patient's blood across the dialysis membrane. Although the two fluids do not mix directly under normal conditions, dissolved contaminants can cross the membrane or otherwise contribute to repeated patient exposure. Monitoring aluminium is therefore an important component of dialysis-fluid and water-quality assurance.

Healthy kidneys help remove aluminium absorbed by the body. Patients with advanced kidney disease cannot eliminate it efficiently and may undergo dialysis several times each week. Even relatively low exposure repeated over time can result in accumulation. Excessive aluminium has historically been associated with neurological complications, bone disease, muscle weakness and anaemia in dialysis patients.
