The AMINO ACID URINE - QUANTITATIVE test measures the amounts of multiple amino acids excreted in urine. Amino acids are filtered from the blood by the kidneys, and most are normally reabsorbed by the kidney tubules. Abnormal quantities or patterns in urine may develop when amino acid metabolism is disrupted, when a specific transport system does not work correctly or when the kidney tubules cannot adequately reabsorb filtered amino acids.

Quantitative urine amino acid analysis may help identify inherited metabolic disorders, selective amino acid transport defects and generalized renal aminoaciduria. It is often interpreted alongside quantitative plasma amino acids because an increased urine concentration can result either from a high blood level or from impaired kidney reabsorption. The overall pattern is usually more informative than one isolated result.
