Beta-2 microglobulin is a component of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules, which are present on the surface of nearly all cells containing a nucleus. These molecules are involved in immune recognition and communication between cells.

As cells are produced, activated, and broken down, beta-2 microglobulin is released into the bloodstream. The kidneys filter the protein through the glomeruli, after which the kidney tubules normally reabsorb and metabolize most of it.
