The ELECTROLYTES (NA, K, CL) - BODY FLUID test measures sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations in a body-fluid specimen. These electrolytes help regulate fluid distribution, electrical activity, acid-base balance and cellular function. Measuring them in a specific fluid can provide information about its composition and possible relationship to blood, urine, digestive secretions or another body compartment.
The term body fluid may include pleural, ascitic, pericardial, synovial, drain, cyst, pancreatic, biliary or another clinically collected fluid. A transudative or exudative collection, urinary leakage, digestive secretion, cyst content and postoperative drain fluid may have different biochemical patterns. Electrolytes are therefore interpreted according to the documented anatomical source and suspected diagnosis.
Potassium results require particular care because cellular breakdown or contamination with blood can increase the measured concentration. Delayed sample transport, incorrect storage, saline contamination and collection from an improperly prepared line can also alter results. A sample may be rejected or interpreted cautiously if its source is unclear or its quality is unsuitable.
There is no single normal range that applies to all body fluids. The laboratory may report measured values without a universal reference interval.
