Mercury can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, or, less commonly, absorption through the skin. Reference intervals and clinical decision limits may differ according to the specimen type, analytical method, population, exposure source, and laboratory protocol.
Result Within the Reference Interval: A result within the laboratory's reference interval generally suggests that a substantially increased serum mercury concentration was not detected at the time of collection. However, it does not completely exclude a past exposure, intermittent exposure, or exposure that is better assessed using another specimen such as urine or whole blood.
Elevated Result: An elevated concentration may indicate recent or ongoing mercury exposure. The result does not by itself determine the source, chemical form, duration, or severity of toxicity. Recent seafood consumption, workplace exposure, environmental contact, or use of a mercury-containing product may contribute to the finding.

Hair testing has specific applications but can be affected by external contamination and should not replace clinically appropriate blood or urine testing. The referring doctor should select the investigation that best matches the suspected exposure.
Symptoms of mercury toxicity overlap with many neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, and psychological conditions. A normal or abnormal result must therefore be interpreted by a healthcare professional. Laboratory testing cannot replace a physical examination, detailed exposure history, or emergency assessment.
Important Safety Information
Suspected mercury poisoning can require urgent medical attention. Do not vacuum or sweep spilled elemental mercury because this can disperse mercury droplets and increase vapour exposure. Leave the contaminated area, avoid direct contact, ventilate it when this can be done safely, and contact the appropriate emergency or hazardous-material authority for guidance.
