Methylmalonic acid is produced in small quantities during the normal metabolism of certain amino acids and fatty acids. The body requires biologically active vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, to convert methylmalonyl-CoA into succinyl-CoA. Preparation Before the Test

Patients should follow their usual diet and maintain normal hydration. Excessive water consumption shortly before collection should be avoided because it can produce an unusually dilute specimen.
Inform the doctor and laboratory about all prescription medicines, non-prescription products, nutritional supplements and recent injections. Recent vitamin B12 supplementation or injection can lower MMA and potentially obscure a previously present deficiency.
