How to Collect a 24-Hour Urine Sample

Starting the Collection

Select the starting time provided by the laboratory or doctor. At that time, empty the bladder into the toilet and do not collect this first urine. Record the exact time. This marks the beginning of the 24-hour collection period.

During the Collection Period

Collect every urine specimen passed after the starting time for the next 24 hours. Use a clean transfer container if provided and carefully add each specimen to the main collection container. Store the urine according to the laboratory's instructions, which commonly require refrigeration or placement in a cooler during collection.

Do not allow toilet paper, stool, menstrual blood, water or cleaning chemicals to enter the specimen. If urine is passed during a bowel movement, it must still be collected without contamination. Washing the hands before and after handling the container is recommended.

Completing the Collection

At exactly the same time on the following day, empty the bladder one final time and add this urine to the container. This final specimen completes the collection. Record the finishing time and return the container promptly according to laboratory instructions.
