TNF-alpha is a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in communication between cells of the immune system. It binds to specific receptors on cell surfaces and activates signalling pathways that influence inflammation, immune-cell activity, fever, blood-vessel function, and programmed cell death.

Pre-analytical handling is particularly important for cytokine testing. Delayed serum separation, inappropriate storage, repeated freezing and thawing, or improper transport may affect measured concentrations. Samples must therefore be processed according to laboratory requirements.
Reference intervals and results can vary according to assay methodology. Values generated using different platforms should not be compared directly without considering the method and reference information on each report.
