About this test
The Chlamydia trachomatis IgA Antibodies Test is a specialized blood test that detects Immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. The test is useful in supporting the diagnosis of recent, persistent, or ongoing Chlamydia infections, particularly when evaluated alongside clinical findings and other laboratory investigations.
Chlamydia trachomatis primarily infects the genital tract, but it can also affect the rectum, throat, and eyes. Many infected individuals experience no symptoms, allowing the infection to spread unknowingly. Untreated infections may lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain in women, and epididymitis or infertility in men.
Unlike IgM antibodies, which indicate an early immune response, IgA antibodies are often associated with ongoing mucosal infection and may be useful in evaluating persistent or chronic Chlamydia infections. The test is commonly performed together with Chlamydia trachomatis IgG and IgM antibody tests, Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs/PCR), and clinical evaluation for a more comprehensive assessment.
Although molecular tests such as PCR remain the preferred method for diagnosing active Chlamydia infection, the IgA Antibody Test may provide valuable additional information in selected clinical situations, especially in chronic or recurrent infections.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects Chlamydia trachomatis IgA antibodies
- Supports diagnosis of recent or persistent Chlamydia infection
- Assists in evaluating chronic genital infections
- Complements PCR and other antibody tests
- Helps assess immune response to infection
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Supports appropriate clinical management
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent genital symptoms
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Recurrent urinary tract symptoms
- Abnormal vaginal or penile discharge
- Pain during urination
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Suspected persistent Chlamydia infection
- Infertility evaluation
- Recurrent sexually transmitted infections
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is required.
- Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about recent antibiotic treatment, previous Chlamydia infection, or ongoing symptoms.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 3–7 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected persistent Chlamydia infection
- Patients with chronic genital or pelvic symptoms
- Women undergoing infertility evaluation
- Men with recurrent urethritis
- Individuals with a history of sexually transmitted infections
- Patients referred by gynecologists, urologists, fertility specialists, infectious disease specialists, or physicians
Clinical Significance
A positive Chlamydia trachomatis IgA antibody result may indicate:
- Recent Chlamydia trachomatis infection
- Persistent or chronic Chlamydia infection
- Ongoing mucosal immune response
- Chlamydia-associated pelvic inflammatory disease
Common symptoms associated with Chlamydia infection include:
- Painful urination
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Penile discharge
- Pelvic pain
- Lower abdominal pain
- Pain during intercourse
- Testicular pain or swelling
- Rectal discomfort or discharge
A positive IgA result suggests an ongoing immune response but does not confirm active infection by itself. Results should always be interpreted together with clinical symptoms, examination findings, and NAAT (PCR) or other laboratory tests. If active infection is suspected, molecular testing is generally recommended for confirmation.
