The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) IgG Antibodies Test is a specialized blood test that detects IgG antibodies against the Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen (EBNA). This test helps determine whether a person has had a previous Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and plays an important role in interpreting the stage of EBV infection when used as part of a complete EBV antibody profile.
Epstein-Barr virus is a common member of the herpesvirus family and is the primary cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). Most people become infected at some point during their lives. After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the body for life. Although many individuals recover completely, EBV can occasionally reactivate, particularly in people with weakened immune systems.
Unlike Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) IgM antibodies, which appear early during infection, EBNA IgG antibodies generally become detectable 2–4 months after the initial infection has resolved and usually remain present for life. Therefore, the presence of EBNA IgG antibodies typically indicates past infection rather than an active illness.
The EBNA IgG test is commonly interpreted together with EBV VCA IgM, VCA IgG, and Early Antigen (EA) IgG tests. Evaluating all these antibodies together helps healthcare providers distinguish between acute infection, recent infection, past infection, and possible viral reactivation.
