About this test
The Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) IgG Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV). This test is primarily used to determine whether a person has immunity to hepatitis A as a result of a previous infection or successful vaccination. It is not intended to diagnose an acute hepatitis A infection.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver and is transmitted mainly through the fecal-oral route, typically by consuming contaminated food or water or through close contact with an infected person. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice. Most people recover completely without developing chronic liver disease.
Following recovery from hepatitis A infection or after vaccination, the immune system produces HAV IgG antibodies, which usually remain detectable for life, providing long-term protection against future infection. Therefore, a positive HAV IgG result generally indicates immunity rather than an active illness.
Doctors often request the HAV IgG Antibody Test to evaluate immunity before travel to regions where hepatitis A is common, before vaccination, after vaccination to assess immune response in selected individuals, or as part of a broader hepatitis screening panel.
For diagnosing acute hepatitis A infection, the HAV IgM Antibody Test is the preferred investigation, as IgM antibodies appear early during active infection.
Benefits of the Test
- Determines immunity to hepatitis A.
- Detects long-lasting HAV IgG antibodies.
- Confirms previous hepatitis A infection or successful vaccination.
- Helps identify individuals who are protected against hepatitis A.
- Useful for pre-travel health assessments.
- Supports vaccination planning.
- Requires only a simple blood sample.
- Provides reliable laboratory results using validated immunoassay methods.
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors recommend the HAV IgG Antibody Test to determine whether an individual has protective immunity against hepatitis A. It is commonly ordered before international travel, in healthcare workers, individuals with chronic liver disease, people at increased risk of hepatitis A exposure, or before administering hepatitis A vaccination when immune status is uncertain.
Preparation Before the Test
No special preparation is required.
You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about previous hepatitis A infection, vaccination history, travel plans, liver disease, or medications. A blood sample is collected from a vein for laboratory analysis.
Normal Reporting Time
Typically: 1–3 Working Days
Reporting time may vary depending on laboratory methodology.
