About this test
The Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) IgG Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the Hepatitis E Virus (HEV). The test is primarily used to determine whether an individual has had a previous HEV infection and has developed an immune response. It is not the preferred test for diagnosing an acute hepatitis E infection.
Hepatitis E is a viral infection that affects the liver and is transmitted mainly through the fecal-oral route, most commonly by consuming contaminated water or food. Outbreaks are more common in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water. In developed countries, certain HEV genotypes may also be transmitted through undercooked pork, deer meat, or organ transplantation.
Most HEV infections are self-limiting, and many people recover completely without long-term liver damage. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice. However, hepatitis E can be particularly severe in pregnant women, especially during the third trimester, and in individuals with weakened immune systems or pre-existing liver disease.
After recovering from HEV infection, the immune system produces HEV IgG antibodies, which may remain detectable for many years. Therefore, a positive HEV IgG result usually indicates past exposure to the virus rather than an active infection.
Doctors may request the HEV IgG Antibody Test when evaluating previous hepatitis E exposure, conducting epidemiological studies, assessing immune status, or investigating unexplained liver disease in combination with other hepatitis tests.
For diagnosing recent or acute hepatitis E infection, the HEV IgM Antibody Test and, in selected cases, HEV RNA molecular testing are preferred.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects previous exposure to Hepatitis E Virus.
- Assesses immune response following HEV infection.
- Supports hepatitis evaluation.
- Helps differentiate past infection from recent infection when combined with HEV IgM testing.
- Useful for epidemiological and clinical investigations.
- Requires only a simple blood sample.
- Reliable laboratory immunoassay.
- Supports comprehensive viral hepatitis assessment.
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors recommend the HEV IgG Antibody Test to determine whether an individual has previously been infected with Hepatitis E Virus. It is often ordered alongside HEV IgM testing when evaluating suspected hepatitis E infection or investigating unexplained liver disease.
Preparation Before the Test
No special preparation is required.
You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about recent travel, liver disease, pregnancy, medications, or possible exposure to contaminated food or water. A blood sample is collected from a vein for laboratory analysis.
Normal Reporting Time
Typically: 2–5 Working Days
Reporting time may vary depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected previous hepatitis E infection.
- Patients undergoing viral hepatitis evaluation.
- People with unexplained liver disease.
- Travelers returning from HEV-endemic regions.
- Individuals exposed to contaminated food or water.
- Patients referred by hepatologists or infectious disease specialists.
- People participating in epidemiological investigations.
- Individuals with abnormal liver function tests.
- Immunocompromised patients when clinically indicated.
- Anyone advised by their healthcare provider.
