About this test

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 & 2 IgG Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2). The test helps determine whether an individual has been previously exposed to either type of herpes simplex virus.

HSV-1 commonly causes oral herpes, which may present as cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth. HSV-2 is most commonly associated with genital herpes, although either virus can infect both oral and genital areas through oral-genital contact. Following infection, the virus remains dormant in the body and may reactivate periodically, causing recurrent outbreaks.

Many people infected with HSV have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, making blood testing useful in selected clinical situations. Symptoms, when present, may include painful blisters or sores, itching, burning, tingling sensations, swollen lymph nodes, fever, or discomfort in the affected area.

The HSV 1 & 2 IgG Antibody Test detects long-lasting IgG antibodies, which generally develop several weeks after infection and usually remain detectable for life. Therefore, a positive IgG result indicates previous exposure to HSV but does not determine when the infection occurred or whether the virus is currently active.

Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with a history of recurrent oral or genital sores, those whose sexual partner has herpes infection, pregnant women with suspected herpes exposure, or when previous HSV exposure needs to be determined.

When active herpes lesions are present, PCR testing from the lesion swab is considered the preferred diagnostic method because it directly detects the virus.

Benefits of the Test

  • Detects previous HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection.
  • Helps determine prior exposure to herpes simplex viruses.
  • Supports evaluation of recurrent oral or genital herpes.
  • Useful when lesions are absent.
  • Assists in pregnancy risk assessment when clinically indicated.
  • Requires only a simple blood sample.
  • Reliable laboratory immunoassay.
  • Supports comprehensive infectious disease evaluation.

Why Doctors Recommend This Test

Doctors recommend the HSV 1 & 2 IgG Antibody Test to determine previous herpes simplex virus exposure, investigate recurrent herpes symptoms, evaluate patients with possible HSV infection, and assist in counseling individuals at risk of herpes transmission.

Preparation Before the Test

No special preparation is required.

You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about previous herpes infections, current symptoms, antiviral medications, pregnancy, or recent exposure to HSV. A blood sample is collected from a vein for laboratory analysis.

Normal Reporting Time

Typically: 1–3 Working Days

Reporting time may vary depending on laboratory methodology.

This test is recommended for:

  • Individuals with recurrent oral or genital sores.
  • People whose partner has herpes infection.
  • Patients with suspected previous HSV exposure.
  • Individuals undergoing sexually transmitted infection (STI) evaluation.
  • Pregnant women when clinically indicated.
  • Patients referred by dermatologists, gynecologists, or infectious disease specialists.
  • Individuals with unexplained genital symptoms.
  • Healthcare providers evaluating HSV history.
  • Patients requiring herpes serological testing.
  • Anyone advised by their healthcare provider.

Test FAQs

What is the HSV 1 & 2 IgG Antibody Test?

The HSV 1 & 2 IgG Antibody Test detects IgG antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 and 2 to determine previous exposure.

What does a positive HSV IgG result mean?

A positive result indicates previous infection or exposure to HSV-1, HSV-2, or both. It does not indicate whether the infection is currently active.

Can this test diagnose an active herpes infection?

No. The HSV IgG Test identifies past exposure. For active sores or blisters, HSV PCR from a lesion swab is the preferred diagnostic test.

Do I need to fast before the test?

No. Fasting is not required.

How is the sample collected?

A healthcare professional collects a blood sample from a vein in your arm for laboratory analysis.

What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2?

HSV-1 most commonly causes oral herpes, while HSV-2 is more commonly associated with genital herpes. However, either type can infect both oral and genital areas.

How soon after infection does IgG become detectable?

HSV IgG antibodies usually develop 2–12 weeks after infection, although this timing may vary among individuals.

Is the HSV IgG Test accurate?

Yes. Type-specific HSV IgG testing is reliable for determining previous exposure when performed using validated laboratory methods. However, early testing after recent exposure may produce false-negative results before antibodies develop.

What should I do if my HSV IgG test is positive?

Discuss the results with your healthcare provider. They will interpret the findings based on your symptoms, medical history, and whether additional testing or treatment is needed.

Can HSV be cured?

There is currently no cure for herpes simplex virus infection. However, antiviral medications can effectively reduce symptoms, shorten outbreaks, and lower the risk of transmission.
