HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS 1 IGM

The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) IgM Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test that detects Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1). IgM antibodies are produced by the immune system during the early stages of an immune response and may be detected in some individuals following a primary herpes infection or, occasionally, during viral reactivation.

HSV-1 is a common virus that primarily causes oral herpes, resulting in cold sores or fever blisters around the lips and mouth. In some cases, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes, usually through oral-genital contact. Once a person is infected, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and may reactivate later in life, leading to recurrent outbreaks.

Symptoms of HSV-1 infection may include painful blisters around the mouth, mouth ulcers, tingling, itching, burning sensations, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, fever, and discomfort while eating or drinking. However, many infected individuals have mild symptoms or remain completely asymptomatic.

Although the HSV-1 IgM Antibody Test can detect an early immune response, current international clinical guidelines do not recommend HSV IgM testing for routine diagnosis of herpes simplex infection. IgM antibodies may be present during both primary infection and recurrent episodes, may cross-react with other herpes viruses, and cannot reliably distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.

For patients with active oral or genital lesions, HSV PCR testing from a lesion swab is the preferred diagnostic method, as it directly detects viral DNA with much higher accuracy. Type-specific HSV-1 IgG antibody testing is generally recommended when determining previous exposure.

Doctors may occasionally request the HSV-1 IgM Antibody Test as part of a broader clinical assessment, but results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history, and other laboratory findings.
