About this test
The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) IgG Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2). It helps determine whether a person has been previously infected with or exposed to HSV-2, the virus most commonly associated with genital herpes.
HSV-2 is a common sexually transmitted virus that spreads through skin-to-skin sexual contact, even when an infected person has no visible sores or symptoms. After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and may reactivate periodically, causing recurrent outbreaks.
Many individuals with HSV-2 infection have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all and may be unaware they are infected. When symptoms occur, they may include painful blisters or ulcers in the genital or anal area, itching, burning, pain during urination, swollen lymph nodes, fever, and flu-like symptoms, especially during the first episode.
The HSV-2 IgG Antibody Test detects type-specific IgG antibodies, which usually become detectable 2 to 12 weeks after infection and typically remain present for life. A positive HSV-2 IgG result indicates previous HSV-2 infection, but it does not determine when the infection occurred or whether the virus is currently active.
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with recurrent genital sores, those whose sexual partner has genital herpes, patients undergoing sexually transmitted infection (STI) evaluation, pregnant women with suspected HSV exposure, or individuals seeking to know their HSV status.
If active genital lesions are present, HSV PCR testing from a lesion swab is considered the preferred diagnostic method because it directly detects viral DNA and provides the highest diagnostic accuracy.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects previous HSV-2 infection.
- Identifies past exposure to genital herpes.
- Supports evaluation of recurrent genital sores.
- Useful when active lesions are absent.
- Assists in selected pregnancy risk assessments.
- Requires only a simple blood sample.
- Reliable laboratory immunoassay.
- Supports comprehensive sexually transmitted infection evaluation.
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors recommend the HSV-2 IgG Antibody Test to determine previous HSV-2 exposure, evaluate recurrent genital herpes, assess individuals with possible herpes infection, and assist in counseling regarding HSV transmission and sexual health.
Preparation Before the Test
No special preparation is required.
You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about previous herpes infections, antiviral medications, pregnancy, current symptoms, or recent sexual exposure. A blood sample is collected from a vein for laboratory analysis.
