Following HIV infection, the immune system takes time to produce detectable antibodies. This period is known as the window period, during which a recently infected person may test negative despite being infected. Depending on the type of assay used, antibodies generally become detectable within 3 to 12 weeks after exposure. If recent exposure is suspected, repeat testing or an HIV-1/2 Antigen/Antibody (4th Generation) Test or HIV Nucleic Acid Test (NAT/PCR) may be recommended.

A reactive (positive) HIV antibody screening result is not considered a final diagnosis. According to international guidelines, all reactive screening tests must be followed by supplemental confirmatory testing using validated HIV diagnostic algorithms before a diagnosis of HIV infection is confirmed.
