The HTLV-I & HTLV-II Antibodies Test is a laboratory blood test used to detect antibodies against Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type I (HTLV-I) and Type II (HTLV-II). These viruses belong to the retrovirus family and primarily infect T-lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell involved in the body's immune response.

HTLV infection is transmitted through infected blood products, sharing contaminated needles, sexual contact, and from an infected mother to her child, primarily through breastfeeding. Routine blood donor screening in many countries has significantly reduced the risk of transmission through blood transfusion.

The HTLV-I & II Antibodies Test is primarily used as a screening test for individuals at risk of infection, blood donors, organ donors, transplant recipients, and patients with clinical features suggestive of HTLV-associated diseases. It is also performed before certain transplant procedures and in selected neurological or hematological evaluations.

A positive HTLV antibody test indicates exposure to HTLV-I or HTLV-II, but it does not distinguish between active infection and past exposure, nor does it identify the specific viral type in all testing methods. Therefore, reactive screening results usually require supplemental confirmatory testing, such as line immunoassay (LIA), Western Blot (where available), or molecular testing using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to confirm infection and determine the viral type.

Early identification of HTLV infection helps reduce transmission, supports appropriate medical follow-up, and allows monitoring for potential complications in high-risk individuals.
