Leptospira IgM Antibody Test

The Leptospira IgM Antibody Test is a laboratory blood test used to detect Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against Leptospira bacteria, the organisms that cause leptospirosis. This test helps support the diagnosis of recent or acute leptospirosis and is most useful when interpreted together with the patient's symptoms, exposure history, and additional laboratory investigations.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira species. Humans usually become infected after contact with water, soil, or mud contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rats, cattle, pigs, and dogs. The bacteria enter the body through broken skin or mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth.

The disease is more common in areas affected by heavy rainfall, flooding, poor sanitation, farming, sewage work, and recreational freshwater exposure. Illness can range from a mild flu-like infection to severe disease involving the liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, and other organs.

The Leptospira IgM Antibody Test is commonly used together with PCR, Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), or repeat serology. PCR is most useful during the first week of illness, while MAT remains the reference serological method for laboratory confirmation in many settings.
