About this test

Leptospira Antibody Panel (IgG & IgM) – Rapid Test

The Leptospira Antibody Panel (IgG & IgM) – Rapid Test is a rapid laboratory blood test used to detect IgM and IgG antibodies against Leptospira bacteria, the organisms responsible for leptospirosis. This test helps support the diagnosis of recent or previous Leptospira infection when interpreted together with clinical findings and exposure history.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by pathogenic Leptospira species. Humans become infected through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals, particularly rats, cattle, pigs, and dogs. The bacteria enter the body through cuts in the skin or through the eyes, nose, or mouth.

Leptospirosis is more common in areas with heavy rainfall, flooding, poor sanitation, farming, sewage work, and outdoor water activities. The disease ranges from a mild flu-like illness to severe, life-threatening infection involving multiple organs.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle pain (especially in the calves and lower back)
  • Chills
  • Red eyes (conjunctival suffusion)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Reduced urine output
  • Kidney or liver dysfunction

The immune system first produces IgM antibodies, which usually become detectable about 5–7 days after symptom onset, indicating a recent or current infection. IgG antibodies generally appear later and may remain detectable for months or years, indicating previous exposure or later stages of infection.

The rapid antibody panel provides quick results and is useful as an initial screening test. However, negative results obtained very early in the illness do not exclude leptospirosis, as antibodies may not yet have developed. In patients with strong clinical suspicion, repeat testing or confirmatory tests such as Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) or Leptospira PCR may be recommended.

Early diagnosis is essential because prompt antibiotic treatment significantly reduces complications and improves patient outcomes.

Benefits of the Test

  • Rapid screening for leptospirosis.
  • Detects both IgM and IgG antibodies.
  • Helps identify recent and previous Leptospira infection.
  • Supports early clinical decision-making.
  • Requires only a simple blood sample.
  • Provides quick results.
  • Useful during outbreaks and post-flood investigations.
  • Supports timely treatment.

Why Doctors Recommend This Test

Doctors recommend the Leptospira IgG & IgM Rapid Test for patients with acute fever, muscle pain, jaundice, kidney dysfunction, recent floodwater exposure, animal exposure, or suspected leptospirosis.

Preparation Before the Test

No special preparation is required.

You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about recent travel, occupational exposure, floodwater contact, animal exposure, or current antibiotic treatment. A blood sample is collected from a vein or finger prick, depending on the test kit used.

Normal Reporting Time

Typically: 15–30 Minutes

Reporting time may vary depending on the laboratory or rapid test platform.

Who Should Take This Test?

This test may be recommended for:

  • Individuals with sudden high fever.
  • Patients with severe muscle pain.
  • People exposed to floodwater.
  • Farmers, sewage workers, and veterinarians.
  • Individuals with suspected leptospirosis.
  • Patients with jaundice or kidney dysfunction.
  • Individuals with recent rodent exposure.
  • Travelers returning from endemic regions.
  • Patients undergoing outbreak investigations.
  • Anyone advised by their healthcare provider.

Test FAQs

What is the Leptospira IgG & IgM Rapid Test?

The test detects IgM and IgG antibodies against Leptospira bacteria to help identify recent or previous leptospirosis infection.

What does a positive IgM result mean?

A positive IgM result usually suggests a recent or current Leptospira infection.

What does a positive IgG result mean?

A positive IgG result generally indicates previous exposure, past infection, or a later stage of infection.

Do I need to fast before the test?

No. Fasting is not required.

How is the sample collected?

A healthcare professional collects a blood sample from a vein or by finger prick, depending on the testing method.

Can a negative rapid test rule out leptospirosis?

No. If testing is performed during the first few days of illness, antibodies may not yet be detectable. Repeat testing or additional laboratory investigations may be recommended.

Is the rapid antibody test accurate?

The rapid test is useful for initial screening, but positive or clinically suspicious cases may require confirmation with Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), PCR, or other validated laboratory methods.

How is leptospirosis transmitted?

Leptospirosis spreads through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with urine from infected animals, especially rodents.

What should I do if my test is positive?

Consult your healthcare provider promptly. Early antibiotic treatment and further evaluation may be required depending on your symptoms and laboratory findings.

What is the difference between the Rapid Test and MAT?

The Rapid Test provides quick screening results, while the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) is considered the reference serological method for confirming leptospirosis in many laboratories.
