Therefore, interpretation requires correlation with clinical findings, CSF analysis, imaging studies, and molecular testing.

For suspected acute mumps involving the central nervous system, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) performed on buccal swabs, CSF (when appropriate), or other clinical specimens is generally the preferred laboratory method for confirming active infection. CSF cell counts, protein, glucose, and other microbiological investigations are also important components of the diagnostic evaluation.
