Preparation Before the Test

How to Collect a 24-Hour Urine Sample
The laboratory will provide a suitable large collection container and written instructions. Some containers may include a preservative. Do not discard, rinse or touch a preservative placed inside the container. Keep the container away from children and avoid direct skin contact with any chemical preservative.
Step 1: Choose a convenient morning to begin. On waking, urinate into the toilet and do not add this first specimen to the container. Record this exact time as the collection start time.
Step 2: Collect every urine specimen produced after the start time during the day and night. Urinate into a clean collection vessel if supplied and carefully transfer the urine into the main container. Do not urinate directly into a container containing preservative unless instructed.
Step 3: Keep collecting all urine for the next 24 hours. Store the container according to the laboratory's instructions, usually in a cool place or refrigerator. Keep it securely closed and separated from food when possible.
Step 4: At the same time the following morning, urinate one final time and add this specimen to the container. This final collection completes the 24-hour period. Record the end time.
Step 5: Return the entire collection promptly to the laboratory. Do not remove or discard any urine. The laboratory measures the total volume and analyses an aliquot to calculate albumin excretion over 24 hours.
If any urine is missed, spilled or contaminated, contact the laboratory. In many cases, the collection must be restarted with a new container. Adding an extra sample later cannot replace urine missed during the actual collection period.
