About this test
MRI WHOLE ABDOMEN is a diagnostic imaging examination that uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency waves and computer processing to create detailed images of the organs and soft tissues within the abdomen. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation. It is especially useful for characterising soft-tissue abnormalities and evaluating structures that may require more detail than an ultrasound can provide.
Depending on the clinical requirement and imaging protocol, the scan may assess the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, major blood vessels, lymph nodes, bowel-related structures and other tissues within the scanned area. The exact anatomical coverage can differ between centres, so the referral and protocol should clearly state which regions and organs need evaluation.
Some examinations are performed without contrast, while others require an intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agent to improve the visibility and characterisation of certain lesions, blood vessels or inflammatory changes. Contrast use is decided by the radiologist based on the clinical indication, kidney function, medical history and previous imaging findings.

A doctor may recommend an MRI Whole Abdomen when symptoms, laboratory results, ultrasound or CT findings require more detailed evaluation. Possible indications include persistent abdominal pain, unexplained swelling, abnormal liver or kidney tests, jaundice, unexplained weight loss, a suspected mass or follow-up of a previously identified abnormality.
MRI can help characterise liver lesions, pancreatic abnormalities, kidney masses, adrenal lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, collections and certain inflammatory or vascular conditions. It may also be used for cancer staging, treatment planning or monitoring, although the protocol must be tailored to the suspected condition.
The examination is not automatically the best test for every abdominal problem. CT may be preferred in some emergencies, while ultrasound, endoscopy or laboratory tests may be more appropriate for other conditions. The referring doctor and radiologist determine the most suitable examination based on the clinical question.
Preparation Before Test
Patients may be asked to avoid food for approximately four to six hours before the scan, especially when the upper abdomen, gallbladder, bile ducts or pancreas will be examined or when contrast is planned. Preparation varies by protocol, so follow the specific instructions provided by Focus Diagnostics. Regular medicines can usually be taken with a small amount of water unless the doctor advises otherwise.
Before entering the MRI room, remove jewellery, watches, mobile phones, hearing aids, removable dental appliances, cards, coins and clothing containing metal. Complete the MRI safety questionnaire and disclose pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, neurostimulators, insulin pumps, metallic fragments, previous surgery and all implanted devices. Device details or an implant card may be required to confirm MRI compatibility.
Inform the imaging team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease, dialysis, liver transplant, previous contrast reactions, allergies and claustrophobia. Kidney-function testing may be required before gadolinium contrast in patients with relevant risk factors. Sedation may occasionally be considered for severe claustrophobia, but it requires advance planning, an accompanying adult and additional safety instructions.
Normal Reporting Time
The radiologist's report is commonly available on the same day or within 24 hours after the scan. Complex findings, comparison with earlier examinations or specialist review may require additional time. Images may be made available separately according to the centre's delivery process.
Who Should Take This Test?
MRI Whole Abdomen may be suitable for patients with persistent or unexplained abdominal symptoms, abnormal laboratory results, suspected organ disease or an indeterminate finding on another scan. It may also be used for monitoring known liver, pancreatic, kidney, adrenal, lymphatic or oncological conditions.
The test should be performed on medical advice. People with implanted devices or metallic material must undergo safety screening before the appointment. Patients who are pregnant, have impaired kidney function or require sedation need individual assessment so the protocol can be planned safely.
Detailed Information
The patient lies on a motorised table that moves into the MRI scanner. A specialised receiver coil is positioned around the abdomen. The machine acquires multiple image sequences, and each sequence is designed to show particular tissue characteristics. The patient must remain still and may be asked to hold their breath for short periods to reduce motion from breathing.
MRI equipment produces loud tapping, knocking and humming sounds during image acquisition. Ear protection is provided, and the patient can communicate with the technologist throughout the examination. The scan commonly takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes, but duration varies according to the protocol, contrast administration and the patient's ability to remain still.
If contrast is required, an intravenous cannula is inserted and gadolinium-based contrast is administered during part of the examination. These agents are generally well tolerated, but temporary discomfort, nausea or an allergic-like reaction can occur. Serious reactions are uncommon. Special consideration is required for people with severe kidney impairment.
MRI is highly effective for many soft-tissue abnormalities, but image quality can be reduced by breathing, bowel movement, inability to remain still or metal-related artefacts. Some small bowel, stomach or colon conditions may require dedicated examinations such as MR enterography, endoscopy or colonoscopy rather than a general abdominal MRI.
A normal MRI does not exclude every cause of abdominal symptoms. Results should be interpreted with the clinical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and previous imaging. The treating doctor will explain whether further investigations, follow-up imaging or treatment are required.
