The HOMOCYSTEINE - PLASMA test measures the concentration of homocysteine in plasma. Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid produced during the normal metabolism of methionine, an amino acid obtained from protein-containing foods. The body normally converts homocysteine into other useful substances with the help of vitamin B12, folate and vitamin B6.

When these vitamins are insufficient, when kidney function is reduced or when certain genetic, medical or lifestyle factors are present, homocysteine can accumulate in the blood. This condition is known as hyperhomocysteinemia. Elevated homocysteine has been associated with vascular disease and blood-clotting risk, but it is not a stand-alone test for diagnosing heart disease or predicting whether a cardiovascular event will occur.
