About this test
The Aspergillus Antibodies (IgG and IgM) Test is a specialized blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Aspergillus species. Aspergillus is a common fungus found in soil, dust, compost, decaying vegetation, and indoor environments. While healthy individuals usually do not develop illness after exposure, people with chronic lung diseases or weakened immune systems are at increased risk of Aspergillus infections.
The combined IgG and IgM antibody test helps evaluate both recent (acute) and long-standing (chronic) exposure to Aspergillus. IgM antibodies are generally associated with a more recent immune response, whereas IgG antibodies are more commonly associated with chronic or previous infection. The test is useful in supporting the diagnosis of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), aspergilloma (fungal ball), and selected cases of other Aspergillus-related diseases.
This test is frequently performed in patients with persistent respiratory symptoms, unexplained lung abnormalities on imaging, or those with risk factors such as previous tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, or immunosuppression.
The Aspergillus Antibodies (IgG and IgM) Test is usually interpreted together with chest X-ray or CT scan, fungal culture, bronchoscopy, galactomannan testing, PCR assays, and clinical findings to establish an accurate diagnosis.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects both Aspergillus IgG and IgM antibodies
- Supports diagnosis of acute and chronic Aspergillus infections
- Helps diagnose chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA)
- Assists in evaluating fungal lung diseases
- Supports early diagnosis and timely antifungal treatment
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Complements imaging and microbiological investigations
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent cough
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Chronic shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent fatigue
- Fever
- Abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan
- Previous tuberculosis or chronic lung disease
- Suspected Aspergillus infection
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about any previous fungal infections, chronic lung diseases, or immunosuppressive medications.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 3–7 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected Aspergillus infection
- Patients with chronic respiratory symptoms
- Individuals with previous tuberculosis or bronchiectasis
- Patients with chronic lung disease
- Immunocompromised individuals
- Patients referred by pulmonologists, infectious disease specialists, or physicians
Clinical Significance
Positive Aspergillus IgG and/or IgM antibodies may be associated with:
- Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA)
- Acute Aspergillus Infection
- Aspergilloma (Fungal Ball)
- Chronic Aspergillus Infection
- Other Aspergillus-related fungal diseases
Common symptoms include:
- Persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
- Reduced exercise tolerance
The presence of IgM antibodies may suggest a more recent immune response, while IgG antibodies are more consistent with chronic or previous exposure. Test results should always be interpreted alongside clinical history, imaging studies, fungal cultures, galactomannan testing, PCR assays, and other laboratory findings.
