About this test
The Brucella Antibodies – Agglutination Test is a specialized blood test used to detect antibodies against Brucella bacteria, the organisms responsible for brucellosis, a bacterial infection transmitted from animals to humans. The test is commonly performed using the Standard Tube Agglutination Test (SAT) or other validated agglutination methods to measure the body's immune response to Brucella infection.
Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from infected animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and dogs to humans. Infection usually occurs through the consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, direct contact with infected animals or animal tissues, or inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Individuals working in farming, veterinary medicine, dairy production, slaughterhouses, and laboratory settings are at a higher risk.
Symptoms of brucellosis can be non-specific and may include prolonged fever, chills, excessive sweating, fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and weight loss. If left untreated, the infection may involve the bones, joints, liver, spleen, heart, or nervous system, leading to chronic complications.
The Brucella Agglutination Test detects antibodies produced against Brucella bacteria. Higher antibody titers are generally more suggestive of active or recent infection, although results should always be interpreted alongside the patient's symptoms, exposure history, and other laboratory findings. The test is often used together with blood cultures, Brucella PCR, and additional serological tests for accurate diagnosis.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects antibodies against Brucella bacteria
- Supports diagnosis of brucellosis
- Helps identify recent or ongoing Brucella infection
- Assists in evaluating prolonged fever of unknown origin
- Supports treatment planning and clinical monitoring
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Useful for individuals with occupational exposure to livestock
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent or recurrent fever
- Night sweats
- Joint pain or arthritis
- Muscle aches
- Chronic fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Exposure to livestock or farm animals
- Consumption of unpasteurized dairy products
- Suspected brucellosis
- Fever of unknown origin
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about recent antibiotic use, occupational exposure to animals, travel history, or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 2–5 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected brucellosis
- Farmers and livestock handlers
- Veterinarians
- Dairy and slaughterhouse workers
- Laboratory personnel handling animal specimens
- Individuals with prolonged unexplained fever
- Patients referred by infectious disease specialists or physicians
Clinical Significance
A positive Brucella Agglutination Test may indicate:
- Acute Brucellosis
- Chronic Brucellosis
- Recent Brucella Infection
- Exposure to Brucella bacteria
Common symptoms associated with brucellosis include:
- Persistent fever
- Chills
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Back pain
A positive result supports the diagnosis of brucellosis, but antibody levels should be interpreted together with the patient's clinical presentation, exposure history, blood culture results, PCR testing (when available), and repeat serological testing if indicated. Rising antibody titers on paired samples may provide stronger evidence of active infection.
