What is an OPG test?

OPG (Orthopantomogram) is a panoramic dental X-ray that captures a wide view of the upper and lower jaws, teeth, jaw joints, and surrounding structures in a single image.

Why is an OPG done?

An OPG is performed to evaluate impacted teeth, wisdom teeth, jaw fractures, cysts, tumors, infections, and overall dental alignment. It is also used for orthodontic and implant planning.

How should I prepare for an OPG?

No special preparation is required. You may be asked to remove jewellery, spectacles, hairpins, or any metal objects around the head and neck area before the scan.

Is OPG safe?

Yes, OPG is safe. It uses a low dose of radiation and is performed under controlled conditions to ensure patient safety.

Is OPG painful?

How long does an OPG take?

The scan usually takes less than 5 minutes, and the actual exposure time is only a few seconds.

Can pregnant women undergo an OPG?

When will I get my OPG results?

OPG images are usually available immediately or within a short time after the scan, depending on the diagnostic center’s reporting process.

What is the difference between OPG and CBCT?

OPG provides a 2D panoramic image of the jaws and teeth, while CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) provides detailed 3D images for advanced dental evaluation and treatment planning.
