Endoscopy

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Endoscopy test?

Endoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) to examine the inside of the digestive tract. It helps doctors diagnose and sometimes treat conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine.

Why is an Endoscopy done?

Endoscopy is performed to investigate symptoms such as persistent stomach pain, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, bleeding, or unexplained weight loss. It helps detect ulcers, inflammation, infections, tumors, and other gastrointestinal problems.

How should I prepare for an Endoscopy?

You will usually be asked to fast for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure to ensure the stomach is empty. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medications and medical conditions.

Is Endoscopy painful?

Endoscopy is generally not painful. A local anaesthetic spray may be used to numb the throat, and mild sedation may be given to help you relax during the procedure.

How long does an Endoscopy take?

The procedure itself usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. However, including preparation and recovery time, you may need to stay at the facility for a few hours.

Is Endoscopy safe?

Yes, Endoscopy is considered safe when performed by trained specialists. Complications are rare but may include mild throat irritation, bleeding, or infection in uncommon cases.

Will I be sedated during Endoscopy?

In many cases, mild sedation is given to make you comfortable. Some procedures may be done without sedation depending on the patient's condition and doctor’s recommendation.

When will I get my Endoscopy results?

The doctor may discuss initial findings immediately after the procedure. If biopsies are taken, lab results may take a few days.

What conditions can be detected with Endoscopy?

Endoscopy can detect gastritis, ulcers, acid reflux disease (GERD), infections, bleeding, polyps, tumors, and other abnormalities of the upper digestive tract.

Can Endoscopy be used for treatment as well?

Yes, in addition to diagnosis, Endoscopy can be used to remove polyps, stop bleeding, take tissue samples (biopsy), or treat certain digestive tract conditions.
