ENMG

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ENMG test?

ENMG (Electroneuromyography) is a diagnostic test that evaluates the health of muscles and the nerves controlling them. It combines nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) to assess nerve and muscle function.

Why is an ENMG test done?

ENMG is performed to diagnose nerve and muscle disorders such as neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle weakness, nerve injuries, radiculopathy, and neuromuscular diseases.

How should I prepare for an ENMG test?

Avoid applying lotions, oils, or creams on the skin before the test. Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Inform your doctor about any medications, bleeding disorders, or implanted medical devices.

Do I need to fast before an ENMG?

Fasting is usually not required for an ENMG test unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Is ENMG safe?

Yes, ENMG is generally safe. Minor discomfort may occur during the procedure, but serious complications are rare. Always inform the medical team about any health conditions beforehand.

What happens during an ENMG test?

During the nerve conduction study, small electrical impulses are applied to measure nerve function. During electromyography, a thin needle electrode is inserted into the muscle to record electrical activity. Both tests help assess nerve and muscle health.

Is ENMG painful?

You may feel mild discomfort from the electrical stimulation and slight pain during the needle insertion for EMG. However, the discomfort is usually brief and tolerable.

How long does an ENMG test take?

The duration depends on the number of nerves and muscles being examined, but it typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

When will I get my ENMG results?

The results are analysed by a neurologist, and the report is usually available within a few days depending on the diagnostic center’s process.

What conditions can ENMG detect?

ENMG can detect peripheral neuropathy, nerve compression syndromes, muscle disorders, motor neuron diseases, nerve injuries, and other neuromuscular conditions.
