About this test
The Anti Soluble Liver Antigen (SLA) Antibody Test is a specialized blood test that detects autoantibodies against Soluble Liver Antigen (SLA), a highly specific marker for Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH). The presence of Anti-SLA antibodies is strongly associated with Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis and is considered one of the most specific serological markers for this chronic autoimmune liver disorder.
Autoimmune hepatitis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy liver cells, resulting in chronic inflammation and progressive liver damage. If left untreated, the disease may lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, or the need for liver transplantation. Early diagnosis and timely treatment with immunosuppressive therapy can significantly improve long-term outcomes.
Unlike some other autoimmune liver antibodies that may also be present in various liver diseases, Anti-SLA antibodies are highly specific for autoimmune hepatitis, making this test particularly valuable in patients with suspected AIH, especially when conventional markers such as Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA) or Anti Smooth Muscle Antibody (ASMA) are negative or inconclusive.
The Anti-SLA Antibody Test is commonly performed along with ANA, ASMA, Anti-LKM antibodies, liver function tests (LFTs), serum Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and, when necessary, liver biopsy findings to establish a comprehensive diagnosis.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects Anti-Soluble Liver Antigen autoantibodies with high specificity
- Helps diagnose Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis
- Supports evaluation of autoimmune liver diseases
- Assists in confirming difficult or atypical cases
- Helps differentiate autoimmune hepatitis from other chronic liver disorders
- Supports treatment planning and long-term monitoring
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistently elevated liver enzymes
- Chronic hepatitis of unknown cause
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Persistent fatigue
- Abdominal discomfort
- Enlarged liver
- Dark-colored urine
- Elevated serum IgG levels
- Suspected autoimmune hepatitis
- Negative or inconclusive ANA or ASMA results
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about liver disease, autoimmune disorders, and current medications.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 3–7 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected autoimmune hepatitis
- Patients with unexplained abnormal liver function tests
- Individuals with chronic liver inflammation
- Patients with suspected Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis
- Individuals with negative routine autoimmune liver antibody tests but persistent clinical suspicion
- Patients referred by hepatologists, gastroenterologists, or immunologists
Clinical Significance
A positive Anti Soluble Liver Antigen (SLA) antibody result may indicate:
- Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis
- Autoimmune Liver Disease
- Chronic Autoimmune Hepatitis
- Immune-Mediated Liver Inflammation
Common symptoms associated with autoimmune hepatitis include:
- Persistent fatigue
- Jaundice
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Joint pain
- Dark urine
- Pale stools
- Itchy skin
- Enlarged liver
Because Anti-SLA antibodies are highly specific for autoimmune hepatitis, a positive result strongly supports the diagnosis. However, results should always be interpreted together with liver function tests, serum IgG levels, ANA, ASMA, Anti-LKM antibodies, imaging studies, and liver biopsy findings when appropriate.
