About this test
The Aspergillosis IgG Test is a specialized blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against Aspergillus, a common group of fungi found in soil, dust, compost, decaying vegetation, and indoor environments. This test is primarily used to help diagnose chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) and other chronic Aspergillus-related infections.
Most healthy individuals inhale Aspergillus spores daily without developing illness. However, people with chronic lung diseases, weakened immune systems, or previous lung infections are at increased risk of developing Aspergillus-related diseases. When the body is exposed to Aspergillus over time, it produces IgG antibodies, which can be detected through this blood test.
The Aspergillosis IgG Test is particularly valuable in patients with persistent respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or abnormal chest imaging suggestive of fungal infection. It is commonly performed alongside chest CT scans, sputum fungal cultures, bronchoscopy, fungal PCR, and other laboratory investigations to establish an accurate diagnosis.
Early diagnosis allows timely antifungal treatment, helping prevent progressive lung damage and improving patient outcomes.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects IgG antibodies against Aspergillus species
- Helps diagnose chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA)
- Supports evaluation of chronic fungal lung infections
- Assists in differentiating fungal infections from other respiratory diseases
- Helps guide antifungal treatment decisions
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Supports early diagnosis and disease management
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent cough lasting several weeks
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Chronic shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent fatigue
- Abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan
- Previous tuberculosis (TB) with residual lung cavities
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Suspected chronic pulmonary aspergillosis
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about previous lung diseases, fungal infections, or immunosuppressive therapy.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 3–7 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected chronic pulmonary aspergillosis
- Patients with chronic respiratory symptoms
- Individuals with previous tuberculosis or chronic lung disease
- Patients with abnormal chest imaging suggestive of fungal infection
- Immunocompromised individuals at risk of fungal infections
- Patients referred by pulmonologists, infectious disease specialists, or physicians
Clinical Significance
An elevated Aspergillus IgG antibody level may indicate:
- Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA)
- Chronic Aspergillus Infection
- Aspergilloma (Fungal Ball)
- Chronic Fungal Lung Disease
Common symptoms associated with Aspergillus infection include:
- Persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
- Fatigue
- Fever (occasionally)
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
- Reduced exercise tolerance
A positive Aspergillus IgG result supports the diagnosis of chronic Aspergillus infection but should always be interpreted together with clinical history, imaging studies, microbiological cultures, fungal PCR, and other laboratory investigations. A positive result alone does not confirm active disease.
