About this test
The Brucella IgG Antibodies Test is a specialized blood test that detects Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with Brucella bacteria. This test is primarily used to support the diagnosis of brucellosis, especially in individuals with chronic infection, previous exposure, or ongoing immune response to the bacteria.
Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease caused by Brucella species, including Brucella melitensis, Brucella abortus, Brucella suis, and Brucella canis. The infection spreads from animals to humans through consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, direct contact with infected animals or animal tissues, or inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Individuals working in farming, veterinary medicine, slaughterhouses, dairy industries, and laboratories have a higher risk of exposure.
Following infection, the immune system produces IgM antibodies during the early stage of illness, followed by IgG antibodies, which usually develop later and may remain detectable for months or years. Therefore, the Brucella IgG Antibody Test is particularly useful in evaluating chronic brucellosis, previous infection, or persistent immune response.
This test is commonly performed alongside Brucella IgM Antibody, Brucella Agglutination Test (SAT), blood cultures, PCR testing, complete blood count (CBC), inflammatory markers, and clinical assessment to establish an accurate diagnosis. Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic therapy help prevent complications affecting the joints, bones, liver, spleen, heart, and nervous system.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects Brucella IgG antibodies with high sensitivity
- Supports diagnosis of chronic brucellosis
- Helps identify previous exposure to Brucella bacteria
- Assists in evaluating persistent or relapsing infection
- Supports treatment monitoring when clinically indicated
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Useful for individuals with occupational exposure to livestock
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent or recurrent fever
- Night sweats
- Joint pain or arthritis
- Muscle aches
- Chronic fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Back pain
- Exposure to livestock or infected animals
- Consumption of unpasteurized dairy products
- Suspected chronic brucellosis
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about recent antibiotic therapy, occupational exposure, travel history, or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 2–5 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected chronic brucellosis
- Farmers and livestock handlers
- Veterinarians
- Dairy industry workers
- Slaughterhouse employees
- Laboratory personnel
- Individuals with prolonged unexplained fever
- Patients referred by infectious disease specialists or physicians
Clinical Significance
A positive Brucella IgG antibody result may indicate:
- Chronic Brucellosis
- Previous Brucella Infection
- Persistent Immune Response
- Past Exposure to Brucella bacteria
Common symptoms associated with brucellosis include:
- Persistent fever
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Back pain
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Weakness
A positive Brucella IgG result suggests previous or ongoing exposure to Brucella bacteria but does not by itself confirm active infection. Results should always be interpreted together with the patient's clinical symptoms, exposure history, Brucella IgM, blood cultures, PCR testing, and other laboratory investigations. Repeat testing or additional diagnostic methods may be recommended when clinically indicated.
