About this test
The Brucella IgM Antibodies Test is a specialized blood test that detects Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the immune system during the early stages of infection with Brucella bacteria. This test is primarily used to help diagnose acute brucellosis, a bacterial zoonotic disease transmitted from infected animals to humans.
Brucellosis is caused by several species of Brucella, including Brucella melitensis, Brucella abortus, Brucella suis, and Brucella canis. Humans usually become infected by consuming unpasteurized milk and dairy products, direct contact with infected animals or animal tissues, or inhaling contaminated aerosols. Individuals working in agriculture, veterinary medicine, dairy farms, slaughterhouses, and microbiology laboratories have a higher risk of exposure.
Following infection, the immune system first produces IgM antibodies, which generally become detectable within the first few weeks of illness. As the infection progresses, IgG antibodies develop and may remain detectable for a longer period. Therefore, the Brucella IgM Antibody Test is especially useful in identifying recent or active infection, allowing early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
This test is commonly performed together with Brucella IgG Antibody, Brucella Agglutination Test (SAT), blood cultures, Brucella PCR, complete blood count (CBC), inflammatory markers, and clinical evaluation to improve diagnostic accuracy. Early treatment reduces the risk of complications affecting the bones, joints, liver, spleen, heart, and nervous system.
Benefits of the Test
- Detects Brucella IgM antibodies during early infection
- Supports diagnosis of acute brucellosis
- Helps identify recent Brucella infection
- Assists in early treatment planning
- Supports evaluation of prolonged fever of unknown origin
- Requires only a peripheral blood sample
- Useful for individuals with occupational exposure to livestock
Why Doctors Recommend This Test
Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with:
- Persistent fever
- Chills
- Night sweats
- Joint pain
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Unexplained weight loss
- Recent exposure to livestock or infected animals
- Consumption of unpasteurized dairy products
- Suspected acute brucellosis
Preparation Before Test
Sample Required
- Peripheral venous blood sample (Serum)
Preparation Guidelines
- No fasting is generally required.
- Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your physician.
- Inform your healthcare provider about recent antibiotic use, occupational exposure, travel history, or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products.
- Follow laboratory instructions before sample collection.
Reporting Time
Results are generally available within 2–5 working days, depending on laboratory methodology.
Who Should Take This Test?
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with suspected acute brucellosis
- Farmers and livestock handlers
- Veterinarians
- Dairy industry workers
- Slaughterhouse employees
- Laboratory personnel
- Individuals with prolonged unexplained fever
- Patients referred by infectious disease specialists or physicians
Clinical Significance
A positive Brucella IgM antibody result may indicate:
- Acute Brucellosis
- Recent Brucella Infection
- Early Immune Response to Brucella
- Active Zoonotic Bacterial Infection
Common symptoms associated with acute brucellosis include:
- Persistent fever
- Chills
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Back pain
A positive Brucella IgM result suggests a recent or active Brucella infection. However, the result should always be interpreted together with the patient's symptoms, exposure history, Brucella IgG, blood cultures, PCR testing, and other laboratory findings. In some cases, repeat testing may be recommended to monitor changes in antibody levels and confirm the diagnosis.
