About Kidney Function Testing
The kidneys filter waste from the blood, balance water and salts, help control blood pressure and keep bones healthy. Chronic kidney disease develops slowly, most often as a result of long-standing diabetes or high blood pressure, and usually without symptoms until late.
A creatinine blood test is used to calculate your eGFR, an estimate of how well the kidneys filter. A urine test for albumin shows whether the filters are leaking protein, often the earliest sign of damage in diabetes.
Kidney stones are a separate, very common problem in hot climates like Hyderabad's. They cause sudden severe pain and are confirmed with ultrasound or CT.
Who should get tested
- Diabetes or high blood pressure, at least once a year
- Swelling of the feet or face, or foamy urine
- Passing urine more or less often than usual, or at night
- Long-term painkiller use, or certain other regular medicines
- Family history of kidney disease, or a past kidney stone
- Adults over 60, as part of a routine health check

What the key tests tell you
- Serum creatinine with eGFR
- The main measure of kidney filtration. eGFR is calculated from creatinine, age and sex; above 90 is normal and below 60 for three months indicates chronic kidney disease.
- Blood urea / BUN
- Rises when kidney function falls, but also with dehydration and high protein intake.
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride)
- Kidneys keep these in balance; abnormal potassium in particular needs prompt attention.
- Uric acid
- High levels can cause gout and stones, and are linked to kidney and heart disease.
- Urine routine and urine albumin–creatinine ratio
- Detect protein, blood and infection in the urine; albumin is an early marker of diabetic kidney damage.
- Ultrasound KUB
- Shows kidney size and structure, stones, cysts and any blockage.
Before your test
- No strict fasting is needed for creatinine and urea, but avoid a heavy meat meal the night before.
- Collect a clean-catch midstream urine sample, preferably the first urine of the morning.
- For an ultrasound KUB, drink water so your bladder is comfortably full.
- Tell us if you take creatine supplements, which can raise creatinine.
Understanding your results
One abnormal result is usually repeated, because creatinine can change with hydration, exercise and diet. Chronic kidney disease is diagnosed when changes persist for three months or more.
Controlling blood pressure and sugar, avoiding unnecessary painkillers and staying well hydrated are the most effective ways to protect kidney function.

What is included in a kidney function test (KFT)?
Typically creatinine, urea or BUN, uric acid and electrolytes, sometimes with calcium and phosphorus. Urine tests are often added. See the test list on this page for details.
What is a normal creatinine level?
Roughly 0.7–1.3 mg/dL in men and 0.6–1.1 mg/dL in women, but it depends on muscle mass and age. eGFR gives a more useful picture than creatinine alone.
Can kidney damage be reversed?
Sudden kidney injury often recovers. Chronic kidney disease cannot usually be reversed, but its progression can be slowed substantially with early treatment.
How often should diabetics test their kidneys?
At least once a year: creatinine with eGFR and a urine albumin test, or more often if results are abnormal.
