About Allergy Testing
An allergy is the immune system overreacting to something that is harmless for most people, such as house dust mite, pollen, mould, pet dander or certain foods. The body produces an antibody called IgE against that substance, and the next exposure releases histamine and other chemicals that cause the symptoms.
In Hyderabad, dust mites, cockroach allergen, parthenium and other pollens, and moulds that thrive in the monsoon are common triggers for nasal allergy and asthma. Food allergy, to milk, egg, peanut, prawns or wheat for example, is less common in adults but can be more serious.
A blood test for specific IgE is a safe alternative to skin-prick testing. It is not affected by antihistamines, works on any skin type and can test many allergens from a single sample.

- Frequent sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, or itchy watery eyes for weeks at a time
- Asthma or wheezing that flares in particular seasons or places

What the key tests tell you
- Total IgE
- The overall level of allergy antibodies. A high value supports an allergic tendency but does not name the trigger.
- Absolute eosinophil count (AEC)
- Eosinophils are white cells that rise in allergies, asthma and some infections, including worm infections.
- Inhalant allergy panel
- Specific IgE for dust mite, pollens, moulds, cockroach and animal dander. Useful for nasal allergy and asthma.
- Food allergy panel
- Specific IgE for common foods such as milk, egg, wheat, peanut, soy and seafood.
- Comprehensive allergy panels
- Larger panels covering both inhaled and food allergens when the trigger is unclear.
Before your test
- No fasting is needed for allergy blood tests.
- Unlike skin tests, you do not need to stop antihistamines before an IgE blood test.
- Write down when symptoms occur, where you are, and what you ate. It helps your doctor choose the right panel.
Understanding your results
Specific IgE results are reported in classes or levels. A positive result means you are sensitised to that allergen; whether it actually causes your symptoms is decided by your doctor by matching it with your history.
A positive food result in someone who eats that food without trouble usually does not mean it must be avoided. Never cut out major foods, especially for children, without medical advice.

Allergy Testing: frequently asked questions
Is a blood test as good as a skin-prick test for allergy?
Both detect sensitisation to allergens. The blood test is preferred when there is widespread eczema, when antihistamines cannot be stopped, or for young children, and many allergens can be tested from one sample.
Which allergy panel should I choose?

How long do allergy test results take?
Specific IgE panels are run in batches and usually take a few working days. Total IgE and eosinophil count are typically faster.
Can allergy testing be done for children?
