About Lung Function Testing
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the two most common long-term lung diseases. Asthma often starts in childhood and is linked to allergies; COPD develops after years of smoking, dust or smoke exposure, including from cooking fuel. Both narrow the airways and are diagnosed with breathing tests.
City air quality, construction dust and seasonal pollen can worsen symptoms in Hyderabad, and many people put up with breathlessness for years without a diagnosis.
A pulmonary function test (PFT) is simple and painless: you breathe out as hard and fast as you can into a tube. Repeating it after an inhaler shows whether the narrowing is reversible, which helps tell asthma from COPD.

What the key tests tell you
- Pulmonary function test (spirometry)
- Measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast. The key test for asthma and COPD.
- Post-bronchodilator spirometry
- The test repeated after an inhaler to see whether airway narrowing improves, typical of asthma.
- Chest X-ray
- Shows infections, fluid, enlarged heart and many lung changes.
- CT chest / HRCT
- Gives detailed images when the X-ray is unclear or interstitial lung disease is suspected.
- Allergy tests and eosinophil count

- Sputum tests
- Check for infection, including TB, in a persistent productive cough.
Before your test
- Avoid smoking for at least an hour and a heavy meal for two hours before a PFT.
- Ask your doctor whether to skip inhalers before the test; short-acting inhalers are often withheld for a few hours.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Bring previous chest X-rays and reports.
Understanding your results
Spirometry results are compared with the expected values for your age, height and sex. A reduced ratio of air breathed out in the first second suggests airway narrowing, and the response to the inhaler helps separate asthma from COPD.
Breathlessness has many causes, including heart disease and anemia, so your doctor may combine lung tests with other investigations.

Lung Function Testing: frequently asked questions
Is a PFT test painful?
No. It involves breathing into a tube with a clip on your nose. Some people feel briefly light-headed from the forceful breathing.
How long does a lung function test take?
Usually 20–30 minutes, longer if the test is repeated after an inhaler.
Can a chest X-ray diagnose asthma?
No. The chest X-ray is often normal in asthma. Spirometry is the test that shows airway narrowing.
Should smokers get a lung test even without symptoms?
Smokers over 40 benefit from spirometry, because COPD can be present before symptoms are obvious. Stopping smoking is the most effective treatment.
