About Fever Testing
Fever is the body's response to an infection, and in Hyderabad the causes change with the season. Dengue and malaria rise during and after the monsoon, typhoid spreads through contaminated food and water, and viral fevers circulate throughout the year.
Many of these illnesses look alike in the first few days, so the right test at the right time matters. A dengue NS1 antigen test is most useful in the first five days, while antibody tests turn positive later. Platelet counts in dengue need to be watched daily during the critical phase.
A doctor's examination decides which tests you need. The aim is to separate a self-limiting viral fever from infections that need specific treatment or closer monitoring.

- High fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, or body and joint pain
- Fever with chills that come and go, or after travel to a malaria-prone area
- Rash, bleeding gums, nosebleeds or unusual bruising

What the key tests tell you
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- White cell count and platelets point towards viral or bacterial infection; falling platelets are a key warning sign in dengue.
- Dengue NS1 antigen
- Detects the dengue virus itself, most reliably in the first one to five days of fever.
- Dengue IgM and IgG
- Antibodies that appear from about day five; they help confirm recent or past dengue infection.
- Malaria antigen and smear
- Rapid antigen test and blood smear to detect the malaria parasite and its type.
- Typhoid tests
- Blood culture is the most reliable early test; Widal and typhoid antibody tests are interpreted with care because of false positives.
- Urine routine and CRP
- Urine test to check for urinary infection; CRP shows the level of inflammation.
Before your test
- No fasting is needed for fever tests.
- Note the day your fever started. It helps decide which dengue test is most useful.
- Avoid taking antibiotics before a blood culture unless a doctor has started them.
- If you are unwell, book home sample collection rather than travelling.
Understanding your results
A normal report in the first day or two does not always rule out infection, as some tests turn positive later. Your doctor may repeat the CBC or antibody tests if the fever continues.
Seek urgent care for persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, breathlessness, drowsiness or a sudden drop in fever with weakness. These can be warning signs in dengue.

Which test is best for dengue in the first few days?
The dengue NS1 antigen test is most useful in the first five days of fever, usually together with a CBC to check platelets. Antibody tests are more useful after day five.
How quickly can I get fever test results?
CBC, malaria and dengue NS1 results are usually available the same day. Blood culture takes longer because bacteria need time to grow.
Can a fever test be done at home in Hyderabad?
Yes. Home sample collection is available across Hyderabad, which is helpful when you are too unwell to travel.
Is the Widal test enough to diagnose typhoid?
On its own it can be misleading because it may be positive from past infection or vaccination. Your doctor interprets it with symptoms, and may ask for a blood culture.
